The Difference Between a Pillow Top and a Euro Top
Pillow top and euro top mattresses are designed for those who want an extra layer of padding on top of the mattress. Both pillow top and euro top mattresses are essentially the same, and many companies use the terms interchangeably which has diluted the differentiation the terms once had. Technically, there is a difference in design; but functionally, the difference is insignificant. Both designs sew an extra layer of padding on top of the mattress to add softness, take the edge off, or fine-tune the comfort of the sleeping surface.
Officially, what is a Pillow Top mattress?
A pillow top mattress looks like it sounds - a mattress with a pillow-like layer on top. Pillow top mattresses feature an additional layer of padding stitched right on top of the mattress. Pillow top mattresses usually look like the extra padding layer is just loose on top, and you could pull it right off, but it is actually sewn underneath to keep it in place.
Officially, what is a Euro Top mattress?
A euro top mattress is very similar to a pillow top mattress, except the extra layer of padding lines up with the edges of the mattress. So instead of looking like the padding is just sitting on top of the mattress, euro tops are sewn to create a flush, uniform appearance. But just like the pillow top, the euro top provides an extra layer of padding to improve initial comfort.
Will the difference matter?
The short answer is no. Both pillow top and euro top mattresses are essentially the same, but technically pillow tops should feel slightly softer. Euro tops also feel soft, but being sewn flush with the edges of the mattress tends to create a slightly tauter surface. US-Mattress carries a wide selection of both pillow and euro top mattresses, but with different manufacturers using these terms in different ways, the line separating the two has been blurred. Realistically, the difference is so minimal that whether or not the models you are looking at are technically a "Pillow Top" or a "Euro Top," as per the official definitions, should be insignificant among the other differences between any given models. So don't sweat it!
