Customizable mattresses give you plenty of options for making the bed truly your own. Mattresses in this category allow you a range of firmness options, letting you pick a comfort level that suits your preferred sleeping position. Some customizable mattresses require you to choose a firmness level at the point of purchase. Others can be flipped or tweaked once you have the mattress in your home.

Looking for a quality mattress that you can modify and customize? Here are a few shopping considerations.
Memory foam: Memory foam mattresses tend to be inexpensive, supportive, and responsive. If there’s a downside, it’s that memory foam often runs hotter than other mattress types. It can be alleviated with cooling gel or with a more porous design.
Innerspring: Individual coils provide support and help the mattress adjust to your movements. Most “traditional” beds are innerspring, though newer innerspring mattresses shouldn’t be nearly as noisy.
Latex: Latex sleeps cool and lasts a long time, though it may also come at a higher price point.
Hybrid: A hybrid mattress combines two or more of the other materials, theoretically offering the best of all worlds.
Set-up: How long will it take you to have your mattress unboxed and set up on the bed frame or the foundation?
Pressure relief: A good mattress will help evenly distribute your body weight and keep the pressure off sensitive joints.
Spine alignment: Natural spine alignment keeps you from waking up feeling creaky and stiff.
Durability: Look for a mattress that’s truly built to last. A lengthy warranty (10-year warranty at the least) is usually a good sign that the product is durable.
Motion transfer: For couples, it’s important to find a mattress that will muffle each partner’s movements in the night.
Temperature regulation: Look for a breathable mattress that circulates the air.
Responsiveness: Responsive mattresses do a better job adjusting to your movements and your body type.
Edge support: Good edge support prevents your mattress from sagging at the corners.
The price of a good customizable mattress depends on the mattress size, material, and more.
Look for a mattress that’s made with an air-circulating cover; gel-infused foam, or a cool material like latex.
You’ll have a certain number of days to break in your new mattress and make sure it’s right for you. Within that window, you can return the mattress for a refund. (Some mattress companies will charge a small return fee.)
Look for a mattress labeled as CertiPUR-US approved.
