What’s Inside the Cocoon Mattress?

The Cocoon by Sealy is an all-foam mattress, consisting of a Chill cover, a layer of high-quality, higher density memory foam, and a Base Support System. Both parts are composed of memory foam. The difference between the Extra-Firm Cocoon and the Medium-Soft Cocoon lies in the proportion of the layers and the density and consistency of the base layer.

Cover

The Cocoon by Sealy has a cover specifically designed to allow you to get the maximum benefit out of your memory foam. After all, what good is memory foam that contours to reduce pressure point pain if your cover is so taut that it defeats that purpose? Cocoon uses a premium stretch-knit cover to allow for the perfect amount of give.

Thanks to the Chill mattress cover, you get the best of both worlds, as that same flexible cover is infused with their propriety “Phase Change Material” that absorbs your body heat, leaving you nice and cool. Because of this, the Cocoon is one of the best cooling mattresses.

Perfect Fit Memory Foam

The first layer of both the soft and firm options is the Comfort Layer. A thin layer of Perfect Fit Memory Foam, which is a high-density foam, cradles you while you sleep. How far you sink into the hug of this foam depends on the following layer.

Personalized Comfort Layer

After the Perfect Fit Memory Foam ends, the polyfoam begins! This is where the primary difference between the medium-soft and extra-firm versions lies. The softer version includes 2” of a comfort polyfoam to provide a softer transition between the top memory foam layer and the firm and durable support layer. The firm option transitions directly from memory foam to the Base Support System, providing firm support closer to the surface of the mattress.

Essential Support Base Layer

Both firmness options contain a Base Support System, consisting of Essential Support Foam, designed to be robust and durable. Sealy puts this foam through rigorous testing so that your memory foam bed will last for a very long time.

In this layer, the Extra-Firm Cocoon uses Reinforced Essential Support Foam. The Medium-Soft Cocoon is built with Flexible Essential Support Foam, which is the other key difference between these firmness options.

Cocoon Mattress Features

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation refers to the control of motion transfer across the mattress. If you sleep with a partner, this is especially important. Also important for co-sleepers and those with pets that bounce in and out of bed all night long, motion isolation is key to getting a good night’s sleep when you don’t sleep alone.

Of all of its fantastic features, the Cocoon’s motion isolation is possibly the best. Its layers of dense foam will absorb the movements of your tossing and turning partner, allowing you to sleep soundly and undisturbed.

Pressure Relief

If you’ve ever slept on a rock-hard mattress or done a lot of camping on the hard ground, you understand how important pressure relief is in a sleeping surface. When you lay down, certain parts of your body (such as the shoulders and hips for side sleepers) come into contact with your mattress before others, and a mattress that doesn’t conform to your body can lead to those pressure points receiving extra pressure. The ideal mattress both supports your body and conforms to its points and curves.

The Cocoon Chill mattress has outstanding pressure relief. Because of its soft top layer, it allows your body to remain in nearly perfect alignment when you lay down, which is especially important for side sleepers. Customizable Firmness Options

The Cocoon by Sealy comes in two firmness levels: medium-soft and extra-firm. Mattress Advisor tested both mattresses and ranked the medium-soft a 6/10 for firmness and the extra-firm an 8/10, which is part of the reason why the Cocoon is considered one of the best mattresses for back pain.

Medium-Soft

This is the ideal firmness level if you prefer to feel like you’re sleeping “in your bed,” as opposed to “on your bed.” The medium-soft Cocoon’s central firm layer is what differentiates it from the extra-firm. Both mattresses have the top layer of Perfect Fit Memory Foam, but the medium-soft also has a 2” transitional layer, which allows your body to settle a bit deeper into the mattress.

Extra-Firm

It’s important to note that “extra firm” is extra firm for a memory foam mattress, but still has some ability to contour to your body and relieve pressure. This is different from some extra firm innerspring mattresses. This option is great for those who need the pressure relief of foam, but still require strong support.

Certi-PUR Certified

When you first open your Cocoon, you may notice a slight odor from what is known as off-gassing. Off-gassing happens when unwrapping any new foam mattress or mattress with foam layers. Strong chemical odors associated with some off-gassing are a result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being released into the air. Certain VOCs can be dangerous, and cause symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.

You can rest easy knowing that Cocoon is certified by Certi-PUR, a not-for-profit organization that tests mattress materials for VOCs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and dangerous flame retardants. This certification is rigorous and a point of pride for any mattress manufacturer. So, any mild odor that you notice is not a cause for concern and will dissipate after a couple of days.

Compatible Foundations

Like any all-foam mattress, the Cocoon needs a little bit of support to do its best work and to retain its shape. Sealy sells custom-designed Cocoon foundations, which are a great option. You can also opt for a box spring, adjustable base, platform bed frame, or slatted bed frame. If you use slats, make sure they are a minimum of 2 inches wide and a maximum of 5 inches apart.

Sleeping Positions Best for Cocoon

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a bed that conforms to their body while still providing support. When you sleep on your side, it’s easy for your spine and neck to end up curved instead of in a straight line. You need a mattress that will conform to your unique body shape while providing cushioning to the spots that need it most.

The Cocoon is one of the best mattresses for side sleepers. Its superior pressure relief properties allow for a straight, healthy spinal alignment throughout the night. It is also great for those who toss and turn between their side and back throughout the night, as it received a strong responsiveness score. This means that when you switch from side-to-side or side-to-back, your Cocoon will quickly adjust to support you in the new position.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers have a bit more freedom when it comes to the best type of mattress for their needs. While you need a little bit of give for the gluteal area and your heels, there just aren’t as many pressure points to worry about. Because of this, support often ranks pretty high on the back sleeper’s mattress checklist.

For this reason, the extra-firm Cocoon is one of the best mattresses for back pain. It still has a layer of contouring foam on top, which will give way for some curves, but there is more support in the middle foam layer. However, if you are a back sleeper who tends to like softer mattresses, the medium-soft is also a solid choice for back sleepers.

Stomach Sleepers

People who sleep on their stomachs need more support. This sleeping position is arguably the worst position for spine alignment. It is easy to sink too much into an extra soft mattress and end up with an arched back and an out-of-whack neck.

Memory foam mattresses can still work for stomach sleepers, however, as long as they’re on the firmer side. The extra-firm Cocoon will likely be the better choice of the two for you if you sleep on your stomach.    If you want to finance your Cocoon mattress, it is possible but does require purchasing using a Cocoon by Sealy credit card. By signing up for the credit card, you are eligible for 0% APR for 12 months with equal payments on a minimum purchase of $500.

2. How long will it take for my Cocoon mattress to be delivered?

   Even before you place your order on cocoonbysealy.com, the website will let you know a delivery estimate for your location. Delivery takes an average of 5 to 7 days. If you need faster delivery, just reach out to their customer service team to discuss UPS Next Day, UPS Second Day, and UPS Saturday Delivery options.

3. How does the 10-year warranty work?

   The Cocoon offers a pretty standard 10-year full-replacement limited warranty. This covers defective mattresses (including tears in the cover), as well as any indentations of 1” or more. Like with any warranty, if it appears that the mattress has been harmed by misuse rather than regular wear and tear, you may run into issues.
