Latex Foam

Memory foam revolutionized the mattress industry, boasting better body contouring and pressure relief than the age old innerspring mattress. Next came latex foam, which offers many of the same benefits as memory foam, but with a more reactive composition. If you dislike the density of memory foam, or the sinking feeling often associated with memory foam, then latex foam is a great alternative.

Talalay vs Dunlop

These two types of latex are named after their different manufacturing processes. Dunlop is the older of the two processes, which whips thick rubber sap into a froth via a centrifuge. The sap is then poured into a mold and steam baked into shape. Natural sediment in the rubber sap sinks toward the bottom, which creates a gradual shift in firmness from bottom to top.

Talalay latex differs by putting the serum into a vacuum chamber after being poured into the mold, and the mold is flash frozen before being steam baked. These additional steps result in a more consistent cell structure, but the Talalay process is also more expensive.

  • Dunlop is denser, generally firmer
  • Talalay is generally softer
  • Both Dunlop and Talalay produce excellent mattresses
  • Dunlop is usually heavier
  • Talalay can be made in more comfort variations
  • Dunlop is generally more durable
