The TEMPUR-Contour Elite is a hard mattress that we recommend for petite or large people who like a firm bed based our testing (see our testing details below.) It’s a mid-priced Tempurpedic model in their Contour Collection.

Comfort Scale Rating

The Contour Elite mattress has a pretty hard feeling; we rate it 2 on our 10 point Comfort Scale (a 1 is hard, 10 is softest.)

Pressure Test Results

We pressure tested the Contour Elite mattress with petite, average and large body sizes in the side and back sleeping positions to see what kind of support and comfort you can expect. (Learn how we test.) The Contour Elite tested well, for petite and large people (Recommended/Good), but not for average size bodies. This may very well be because the mattress is so firm, heavier people can push into the mattress for decent contouring, and petite people are so light they do not generate pressure points on this surface. The average body size tests did find pressure points, and the scores were below average so we rated their back and side positions "Not Recommended."

It’s important for the mattress to contour and support your body for 2 reasons: First, contouring helps distribute your weight so you don’t have too much weight concentrated in a small area because that causes discomfort, and you’ll end up tossing and turning. Secondly, it’s important to have good support in key areas like your lower back, lower side of your ribs, and some support in under your legs. Poor support can lead to things like a sore back in the morning.

The Contour Elite mattress comes with an industry standard, 10 year warranty, against factory defects.

The Contour Elite mattress performed decently in our testing and analysis. We rated the mattress a ‘Recommend’ for large people, and also petite people who sleep on their backs. Petite side sleepers rated ‘Good’. In these cases the mattress demonstrated sufficient contouring to minimize pressure points – the body weight was distributed so as to avoid concentrated points of high pressure that can cause discomfort, tossing and turning and loss of sleep.

If you like a firm mattress, and have the body type/sleep preference described above then you can make a smart choice with this bed. For the average sized bodies we’d suggest you look at other models. The price is not cheap, $3,299 in a queen and $3,999 king. If you tend to sleep hot, or are worried about that, then you can check out the same model with the Breeze cooling features. But that jumps the price another $1,000.
