Pros & Cons
Pressure Test Results
We’ve pressure tested the Flex Elite mattress with petite, average and large size people in both the side and back sleeping positions to see what kind of support and comfort you can expect. (Learn how we test.) The TEMPUR-Flex Elite was “Not Recommended” on 3 of the 6 tests seen below. To elaborate a bit, the side positions for average and petite sleepers had excessive pressure points that are uncomfortable and cause tossing and turning, reducing the quality of sleep. The average size back sleeper also had that problem as well, so we do “not recommend” those beds if you fit into those groups.
However, in the case of large people in either position, or petite back sleepers, the mattress did fine and we rated it “good”. The weight distribution was adequate and the mattress demonstrated support in the lower back and legs. These are not the tippy top results we sometimes see, but certainly good and therefore you can purchase with confidence. The Flex Elite mattress will provide the proper support and contouring for these sleepers.

More about Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic created the memory foam mattress category here in the U.S. Founded in 1992, they continually grew until they became a household name and large enough to buy the Sealy Mattress Company. They’re now a public company called Tempur-Sealy and sell mattresses worldwide.
There are 2 important points of differentiation vs other foam mattresses. First, Tempur-Pedic actually designs and manufactures their foam components and mattresses. This speaks to their degree of expertise (most foam mattress brands buy components from suppliers).
Secondly, Tempur-Pedic has always created premium products. As in any industry, there are companies that make cheaper priced, lower quality products, and those that make higher quality, higher priced products. Tempur-Pedic has always made higher quality mattresses using premium materials and manufacturing standards. The success of their mattresses, and long running reputation for quality, propelled their company to be the largest in the world.
The Flex Elite is a mattress that is suitable for some people, but there are situations where we do not recommend it. As we outlined in more detail above, for large people, or petite back sleepers we felt the mattress was good. It has good performance in terms of contouring comfort and proper support. And since the mattress feels like 4.5 out of 10 on our Comfort Scale, it’s a medium feeling mattress, although leaning a bit toward the firm side. This is generally acceptable to most people.
But for average size people (a lot of us), or petite side sleepers, the mattress didn’t provide sufficient pressure relief so we do not recommend the mattress. In addition, the mattress is expensive and there are other models that offer better serving options.
