The original Tuft & Needle mattress is made of two foam layers, including an Adaptive Foam top layer. This means the bed won’t contour to your body like traditional memory foam beds. Instead, the Tuft & Needle mattress remains responsive to your movements while also preventing the overheating that can happen when a mattress really contours around your curves.
Since it doesn’t have pocketed coils, this mattress may not be a great option for heavier sleepers (those weighing over 250 lbs.) who may require a bed with greater support over the long haul. See: Best Mattress for Heavy People
The Purple mattress is designed with a unique Hyper-Elastic Polymer comfort top in a Purple Grid pattern. Beneath that are two more layers: a comfort foam transition layer and a support foam base. The polymer top is designed to provide support for your pressure points, keeping your spine in alignment (Purple scored slightly higher than Tuft & Needle for spine alignment and ultimately is the firmest option of the two). Purple is a great bed for all sleeping positions, especially side, stomach, and back sleepers, because it provides pressure relief as well as support. Additionally, the Purple Grid pattern includes thousands of air channels to encourage air movement.
Both the Tuft & Needle and Purple mattresses are a medium on the firmness scale. We rated the firmness of the Purple mattress slightly higher (6.5/10) than the Tuft & Needle mattress (6/10). Both of these mattresses allow you to easily change positions throughout the night and prevent you from sinking in too deeply. While they are both medium firm, the Purple has more of a gel-like feel.
For couples buying a new mattress, motion isolation is an important factor to consider. Motion isolation prevents you from being awakened every time your partner moves or gets up, resulting in a more restful night. Both mattresses scored a respectable 7/10 in the motion isolation category, meaning you can feel confident that either mattress will meet your needs quite nicely.
When sharing the bed with another person, you may find yourself snoozing at the edge of the mattress. For this reason, it’s important to find a bed that maintains its shape and retains a supportive performance all the way through to the edge. The Tuft & Needle and Purple mattresses both scored very well in the edge support category.
Though the Purple mattress previously performed poorly in terms of edge support, they have since redesigned their bed with dense support rails on the edge of the bed. This resulted in a big improvement that makes it a reliable choice as a mattress for couples. The Tuft & Needle mattress also does a good job in the edge support category. The Adaptive Foam topper combined with the foam base maintains the bed’s integrity all the way out to the edges.

Like Tuft & Needle, Purple offers free shipping and returns, along with a 100-night sleep trial. Tuft & Needle mattresses hold multiple certifications by independent testers. This all-foam mattress is GREENGUARD GOLD certified, signifying that it passed the strictest chemical emissions standards tested for by UL Environment. It also features a CertiPUR-US certification, ensuring that it is free of fire retardants, formaldehyde, ozone depleters, and more.
Yes, the company offers a 10-year limited warranty for their mattresses. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, including compressions measuring 3/4” or more, sagging, flaws in the foam that lead to splitting, and cover defects that lead to unraveling. Their warranty does not cover normal wear and tear.

Simply try the mattress in your own home and, if you are not satisfied, contact the company to start the return process. The company will pick up the mattress free-of-charge and donate it to a charity. That said, according to Tuft & Needle, 95% of customers choose to keep their mattresses.
Yes! Purple offers Affirm as an option for customers who choose to finance their mattress. Affirm has APRs as low as 0% and provides a real-time approval decision during the checkout process.
Yes. The Purple mattress has a Hyper-Elastic Polymer Foam topper that provides great pressure relief, an important factor for people who sleep on their sides. The combination of support and relief for pressure points is terrific for this sleep position (as well as back, stomach, and combo sleepers).
This mattress features a Purple Grid top layer with thousands of air channels to move heat away from the body. Because it was designed especially for promoting airflow, this mattress will not trap heat and is a good option for those who seek a cooler sleep experience. It scored slightly higher than Tuft & Needle in cooling performance.
The top layer of Purple’s original mattress is made of Hyper-Elastic Polymer so it will cradle your hips and shoulders while supporting your back. That makes it a great choice for all sleeping positions (back, stomach, side, or combo), and ensures you do not sink in and get stuck in one position.
